The fencepost problem: why panels never come out even
Almost every wainscoting layout comes down to the same small problem. You have a wall of a fixed length and you want a row of identical panels across it. If you start from one end and space the stiles evenly, the last panel comes out a different width than the rest — and the difference is always visible, because the eye compares the two ends of the wall.
The fix is to stop thinking in spacing and start thinking in counts. A wall with 5 panels has 6 stiles, because there is one at each end as well as one between every pair of panels. Once you accept the end stiles, the arithmetic is simple:
- Total stile width = (panels + 1) × stile width
- Panel width = (wall length − total stile width) ÷ panels
That is the whole calculation, and it is why the stile at each end of the wall matters so much. Skip them and every panel comes out wider than you planned; put them in and all the panels are identical — including the two at the ends, which is the part people get wrong.
The calculator works in both directions. If you know you want five panels, it gives you the panel width. If you know a 24 in panel is what looks right, it tells you how many whole panels of about that width fit the wall and what they actually come out at.
Board and batten vs picture frame
The arithmetic is the same for both; what changes is the look and the width of the vertical members.

Board and batten reads as a modern farmhouse treatment: wide flat bays with a narrow strip over each joint. Picture frame reads more traditional, because the stiles are wide enough to look like a frame around each panel. Neither is a code question — it is taste, and the calculator does not care which you pick, only what the widths are.

Two things worth noticing. The panel count jumps in steps, so asking for 16 in and asking for 17 in may give you the same layout. And the width you get never exactly matches the width you asked for, because the wall has to be divided into a whole number of panels — that is the fencepost problem again, and the calculator is solving it rather than hiding it.
Worked example: a 12 ft wall, 5 panels
Take a 12 ft wall — 144 in — with 5 panels, 3½ in stiles and a wainscot height of 36 in. Allow 10% waste.
Six stiles at 3½ in is 21 in of the wall. Take that off 144 in and you have 123 in to divide between 5 panels, so each panel is 24 5/8 in. That is the number you set your spacer to.
For material, add the verticals and the rails. The six stiles at 36 in each is 216 in. The top and bottom rails are one wall length each — 144 in apiece, so 288 in. That is 504 in, or 42 linear ft, before waste. Add 10% for 46.2 linear ft, which is 6 boards of 8 ft.
Cut the six stiles first, from boards that are straight. The battens are the visible part of this job — a bowed batten shows a shadow line down the wall that no amount of filler will hide, and since each stile is only 36 in you get two out of every 8 ft board with very little waste.
Does the building code cover wainscoting?
No. Wainscoting is finish carpentry, and the International Residential Code does not regulate it. There is no code figure for panel width, stile width, spacing or wainscot height — those are design decisions, and the numbers on this page are arithmetic, not law.
Two practical rules matter more than any code here, and neither of them is about the layout:
- Do not bury an outlet or a switch. Cut the panel around the box. An electrical box has to stay reachable, and covering one over is a problem the first time something needs servicing.
- If the wainscot runs up a stairwell, the handrail on that wall is set by code at 34–38 in above the nosing (IRC R311.7.8), and a chair rail is not a handrail. Keep them clearly separate, or fit a proper rail over the wainscot.
For the layout itself, the three things that decide the result are the wall length, the stile width and whether you want a panel in the middle of the wall. Measure the wall at the wainscot height, use the actual width of the material rather than the nominal size, and lay out each wall of a room on its own.
Frequently asked questions
How do I space board and batten?
Divide the wall into a whole number of panels and let the spacing fall out of that, rather than picking a spacing and hoping the wall divides evenly. A wall with 5 panels has 6 battens — one at each end and one between every pair of panels. Batten spacing of 16–24 in between battens is the usual range; 12 in and below reads dense and formal, and 30 in and above needs a tall, wide wall to carry it.
How many battens do I need for a 12 ft wall?
It depends on the panel width you want. For a 12 ft wall with 3½ in stiles: 12 panels means 13 battens, 9 panels means 10 battens, 7 panels means 8, 5 panels means 6, and 4 panels means 5. The batten count is always one more than the panel count, because there is one at each end of the wall as well as one between the panels.
Should I use an odd or even number of panels?
Odd numbers usually look better on a wall you face straight on, because they put a panel in the middle and give the wall a centre line. An even number puts a stile on the centre line instead, which can read as if the wall was meant to be split in two. On a wall with a door or a window off to one side, though, symmetry with the opening matters more than the panel count — line the layout up with the opening and let the count be whatever it is.
What height should wainscoting be?
About a third of the wall is the rule of thumb: 32–36 in on an 8 ft wall. The one dimension worth matching to something real is the chair rail — 30–34 in is the range that lines up with the back of a dining chair, so the rail does not get scuffed. With a 9 ft or 10 ft ceiling, extend the wainscot to 42–48 in or it will look short and lost. There is no code figure; it is a proportion judgement.
Is a 1 × 4 actually 4 inches wide?
No. A 1 × 4 is 3½ in wide, a 1 × 3 is 2½ in and a 1 × 2 is 1½ in, because the board is planed after sawing. This matters more in a wainscoting layout than almost anywhere else, because every stile width feeds into the panel width: entering 4 in instead of 3½ in on a 5-panel wall throws the panel width out by half an inch, and that error is visible. Always measure the board you actually bought, or use the dressed size.
Do I add stiles at both ends of the wall?
Yes, and this is the single most common layout mistake. Stiles at both ends are what make the end panels the same width as the middle ones. A wall with 5 panels needs 6 stiles, not 4. If you leave them out, the two end panels come out wider than the rest and the wall looks wrong from across the room — even though the spacing in between is perfectly even.
How do I lay out wainscoting around a corner?
Lay out one wall at a time, with a stile at each end of each wall, and do not carry the panel count around the corner. If you wrap the spacing around the room instead, the last panel you reach will not match the first one, and the mismatch lands right at the most visible corner. Treating each wall as its own layout costs you nothing and keeps every panel on every wall identical.
How much material should I order?
Add up the verticals and the horizontal rails: each stile is one wainscot height, and the top and bottom rails are each one wall length. Allow 10% on top for the cuts and for any panels you have to cut around outlets. On a 12 ft wall with 5 panels and 36 in wainscot that comes to 42 linear ft before waste and 46.2 linear ft after, which is 6 boards of 8 ft. Buy the straightest boards you can find — the battens are the part of this job that people actually see.
